2007 Pewter Holiday Ornament

This 2007 commemorative ornament celebrates Ohio University's Galbreath Chapel.

The addition of the Galbreath Chapel over fifty years ago is an important part of the Ohio University history. Providing for people of all religious affiliations, the quaint chapel has many uses and brings beauty and charm to the Ohio University campus.

Information about Galbreath Chapel courtsey of the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections.
  • Located between Memorial Auditorium and Ellis Hall, the Galbreath Chapel was constructed in 1957 and named for John Galbreath’s late wife, Helen Mauck Galbreath.
  • John Galbreath and his wife began dating while they were both students at Ohio University and they were married on September 4, 1921; the fall after John Galbreath graduated.
  • John Galbreath, a member of the board of trustees donated $248,000 for the chapel to be built in memorial of his beloved wife and he formally dedicated it to her in 1958.
  • John Galbreath helped to pick the chapel’s site of construction and it is believed that the location of the chapel is the very same spot they shared their first kiss while attending the university.
  • The Galbreath Chapel is octagonal in shape and provides a 45 by 45 feet sanctuary and a seating capacity of 150. One defining feature of the chapel is the spire that reaches 120 feet in the air.
  • In 1997 Mr. and Mrs. Galbreath’s daughter Joan Phillips donated the organ which is displayed on the balcony of the chapel.
  • An important feature of the Galbreath chapel is its acceptance of all religious affiliations. The chapel is nondenominational and serves people of all beliefs. This feature was important to Mr. Galbreath during the construction of the chapel, as well as it was to the community, due to the religious diversity of the campus.
  • Currently the chapel still serves people of different faiths and all are welcome. Many students, as well as community members, come to the Galbreath Chapel for meditation and personal prayer. Many call the chapel peaceful and serene and it is considered a place of comfort.
